285/40/17 or 285/35/17 rear, most setups I've seen are like that. So maybe you mis-read one number, it's easy to do and even easier to forget unless written down. Since you want 18 inch wheels 245/40/18 front and 285/35/18 should work fine. The 285 rears will give the wheel a wide footprint that your looking for. I would be helpful to update your post with info about the wheel brand and name or a link to the website. Since wheel fitment is more complicated due to wheel design, offset, and all the data provided in the links in DaveN's post above. Finding a wheel shop that know their stuuf is the key. As for good performance, 18 inch wheels will be heavier, but the difference is mild, for daily driving you'll notice small differences in acceration and stopping distance.
